The Way of Pure Sound

January 9, 2027 - September 9, 2027

A 9-Month Online (and In-Person) Adventure in Sound Healing

Beginning January 9, 2027

Coming in 2027: a 9-month adventure in Pure Sound that you can join from anywhere in the world, with options to gather online or in person.

This program opens a rare portal to study directly with our Research Director—known among his colleagues as the “Indiana Jones of Sound Healing.” With 53 years as a researcher, sound designer for the Imagination, and teacher, he stands at the forefront of the modern sound healing movement.

  • First to uncover the truth about Himalayan Singing Bowls

  • Brought knowledge of the Shang (Tibetan ritual cymbals) to the West

  • Has taught classes on 100+ instruments used by sound healers today

  • Has mentored many of today’s teachers, including Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, Richard Rudis,

    and countless others

Since announcing his semi-retirement in 2025, close students have nicknamed him “Mitchapedia”—a living encyclopedia of sound healing wisdom. This 9-month program grew directly from that recognition.

What This Program Is Really About

At its core, this training is about clarity:

  • How do we truly understand what we “know” or have heard in the world of Sound Healing?

  • How do we reach certainty amid unproven scientific claims, mass-marketed myths about instruments, and methods that don’t hold up under inquiry?

  • How do we stop believing the instruments are the magic—and begin to recognize that the student is the instrument?

According to our research, sound healing can be traced back around 14,000 years. Yet most students today can’t say how the modern movement even started in the United States, or how we were led to equate sound healing with buying more “shiny objects”—giant tuning forks, enormous singing bowls—instead of building inner capacity and understanding.

This program is about building on truth, not trend.

The Ancient Compass: The Way of Pure Sound Text

In 1961, three Tibetan monks brought an ancient text from Samling Monastery to Oxford for Tibetanologist David Snellgrove to translate. That text has become the compass for this training.

On page 67, it states:

“Attentive listening is the key that opens the casket of the intellect. Words produce understanding where once there were ignorance and folly. Knowledge brings clarity where there was dark incomprehension.

So we listen and we diagnose.”

The substance of this 9-month program is exactly that:

Attentive listening, deeper understanding, and clarity—about what is true in Sound Healing and what is not.

Our Research Director has:

  • Studied this text for 30+ years

  • Been a direct student of the monk who brought the text to Oxford in 1961

  • Been initiated into the lineage that transmits the teachings within it

He describes the text as a conversation between a Master of Pure Sound and Guhyasmaja, a powerful protector and Master of Secrets. This makes The Way of Pure Sound a secret teaching structured in Outer, Inner, and Secret instructions.

Very few Westerners have received this transmission directly. You’ll be learning from someone regarded as an insider, who has done the work and been recognized within the lineage.

    A Lost Lineage Recovered

Pure Sound is not just an idea—it is a living substance found across traditions:

Babylonian, Persian, Hindustani, Carnatic, Tibetan, Nepalese, Shinto, Vedic, Greek, Hermetic, Sufi, and Jain lineages, among others.

Most people don’t know that Pythagoras wrote about Pure Sound after visiting India and spending time with the Brachmanes. Preserved in the Tansen lineage and believed to have faded with Wazir Khan’s passing, this stream later resurfaced through Gurdjieff and Sufi traditions.

While the West endured the Dark Ages, plagues, and religious persecution, the great flowering of sound healing as art and science blossomed in the medieval Arab world. Arabic scholars produced over 600 works, including texts on sound healing and the interplay of color, herbs, and astrology with music—many still untranslated into English.

Over 9 months, we will follow this historical timeline and explore how these threads come together in the world of Sound Healing today.

The Way of Pure Sound as Terma

The Way of Pure Sound is described as the 7th “vehicle” in a terma text discovered in the 1300s, preserved in a monastery near Mount Everest, and believed to arise from an even older oral tradition reaching back to the ancient kingdom of Zhang Zhung—predating the formation of

Tibet itself.

This text may be among the oldest writings about Sound itself and how we understand it. It serves as the guiding manuscript for this 9-month journey.

The text opens:

“Then the Teacher said again: good, good, faithful son, O Guhyasmaja, comprehender of secret spells, Master of Secrets, you are good indeed. The matters about which you ask, I will explain in full.”

From there, it describes how one navigates the Way of Pure Sound and the steps required along the way.

Experience Field Method: The Research Director’s Protocol

Since the pandemic, our Research Director has been developing a sound healing protocol for practitioners called the Experience Field Method.

Its substance includes:

  • Hypnosis, meditation, trance

  • Drone, white noise, gongs

  • Blindfolds, ASMR techniques, Tactile elements

  • 3rd Man Factor

  • Akousmatic theory

  • Messages in the soundscape

  • The Floating Man thought experiment

    It functions both as:

  • A protocol for practitioners, and

  • An ethos for creating soundscapes and sound baths with depth and integrity

This 9-month training will draw from this method while being rooted in the Way of Pure Sound text and its lineage.

    Monthly Anchored Transmissions

Watch Party schedule: monthly on the 9th

(Starting January 9, meeting on the 9th of each month for nine months)

    Each online session includes:

  • 55 minutes – Transmission

History, frameworks, exemplars, and deep dives into Pure Sound and its lineages

  • 15 minutes – Break

  • 30 minutes – Soundworkers Playbook

Practical tools, techniques, demonstrations, and guidance on instruments

• 20 minutes – Live Q&A

Community interaction, inquiries, and clarifications

You will also receive Dr. Mitch’s digital Soundworkers Playbook—a practical resource on instruments, their use, and how to get the most from them.

Special Focus: Sound and Dying

Drawing on initiations in Buddhist and Bönpo Phowa (Transference of Consciousness at death), Dr. Mitch will explore:

  • The role of sound at the end of life

  • How these teachings relate to death, transition, and dying practices

  • Insights previously shared with Death Doulas and in specialized teachings

    Who This Is For

  • Sound healers, practitioners, and facilitators building or deepening their work

  • Centers looking to anchor community sound programs

  • Musicians, therapists, contemplatives, and spiritual practitioners integrating sound with

    healing

  • Beginners seeking a solid foundation grounded in history, lineage, and truth

  • Teachers and advanced practitioners wanting a deeper compass to evaluate methods,

    claims, and instruments

  • Anyone longing for community, a safe place to explore new ideas, and a refuge from the

    noise of mass marketing

    What Makes This Program Different

  • It goes beyond ordinary online trainings and surface-level introductions.

  • It offers historical, metaphysical, and scientific perspectives side by side.

  • It includes unpublished manuscripts and previously private lectures from our Research

    Director’s archives.

  • You are learning from one of the founders of the sound healing movement in North

    America, recognized within multiple traditions.

As our Research Director notes:

“The first stage that the Way of Pure Sound explains is one of Transformation. What student of Sound Healing has not felt transformed by the instruments they use—like the Gong, for example? They already understand transformation, but not the degree and level required to reach what the Pure Sound text is pointing to.”

This 9-month program is dedicated to that deeper level of transformation.
